GET INVOLVED
There are numerous ways you can help address the plight of those less
fortunate in our community:
- Don’t give to people who panhandle. Politely say “no” or “sorry.”
- Educate yourself about what services are available in Austin for the homeless.
- Donate to social service agencies that are already making a difference in Austin.
- Download and use the Know Before You Give campaign materials located to the
right on this page.
- Show your support for the campaign and sign up as supporter.
- Spread the word about the Know Before You Give campaign:
- Share knowbeforeyougive.org on Facebook and Twitter.
- Pass out brochures.
- Pick up a pre-printed logo decal and display it in your place of business, on your vehicle or anywhere on your property you want to show your support. Decals and limited printed brochures available at the Austin Visitors Center (209 E. 6th Street) daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Educate your friends and family members.
When approached by someone panhandling:
- Politely say “No” or “Sorry” and continue on your way.
- Do not give money directly to someone who is panhandling, but do acknowledge him or her and respond politely.
- Aggressive panhandling is illegal. If you feel threatened, call 911.
- Be compassionate. Donate to any of Austin’s social service organizations.
